Dear Friends and Neighbours,

In our readings this week, (links below) we open with Nehemiah, where Ezra reads Scripture aloud to returned exiles who weep at hearing God’s voice again. Yet Nehemiah gently redirects them: “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Scripture is not a heavy burden to crush us, but a gift to bring us home and spark deep, genuine celebration.

Paul urges us, in Colossians, to let the word of Christ “dwell in you richly.” He asks us not just to read the Bible, but to wear it—clothing ourselves daily in compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. When Scripture takes root, it transforms our relationships and fills our lives with gratitude.

In Matthew, amidst images of shifting seasons and turbulent times, Jesus gives us an unshakable promise: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” When everything around us feels uncertain, his truth remains our rock-solid anchor.

Amid today’s noisy, fast-paced world of busy routines, distractions, and ever-changing times, Bible Sunday invites us to pause and reconnect with the story that grounds us. Like the people in Nehemiah’s day, we are invited to listen anew, find comfort, and lean on promises that outlast time itself.  As Christ’s word dwells in our hearts this week and we come to worship, may it quiet our anxieties, shape our kindness toward others, and remind us that God’s love endures forever.

Yours in Christ

The Collect of the Day

Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scripture to be written

for our learning: help us to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly

digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy Word,

we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life,

which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.       Amen

Collect from the Book of Common Prayer:

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience, and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.    Amen

For your prayers

Please pray for…

… the whole Church as we celebrate Bible Sunday, that we may mark, learn, and inwardly digest the Scriptures and be transformed by their truth. ….especially for our own benefice during this time of vacancy. Guide our churchwardens and PCCs with your wisdom, and give patience and hope to our congregation while we wait.

…our world in this fragile season. ….nations affected by ongoing conflict, war, and rising tensions across the Middle East, and for all who are fleeing hardship, violence, or severe humanitarian crisis. ….the leaders of all nations, that they may be guided by wisdom, integrity, and restraint. In a time of economic pressure, changing technology, and environmental uncertainty, grant that those in power act with compassion to protect the most vulnerable.

…our local streets, schools, workplaces, and homes. … families facing financial worry, rising household costs, or anxiety about the months ahead.  …all local foodbanks, charities, and community groups working tirelessly to care for those in need. …….where there is loneliness or fear, bring connection, peace, and the light of Christ’s love.

…all who are carrying burdens of pain, illness, grief, or mental exhaustion. …..those in hospital, those receiving care at home, and all who feel overwhelmed by health struggles or long waits for medical care. Strengthen the hands of our doctors, nurses, carers, and emergency responders, and surround every sufferer with the comfort of God’s abiding presence.

…Judy Alder, Jan Gabecai, all who have died in the faith of Christ, and those whose faith is known to God alone. We give thanks for their lives and the love they shared with us. Wrap your gentle comfort around all who are grieving the loss of a loved one and bring us all at last into the fullness of your eternal kingdom.

Amen.
