On Friday 30th October at 7pm, Stowey Church will host a presentation by Andy Mayes about Burledge Iron Age Hillfort: Prehistory and the Poor House. Andy is a professional Archaeologist with over 30 years’ experience in the field and as a consultant. He has worked on many of our key heritage sites, including the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and the Historic Royal Palaces. Burledge is an early Iron Age promontory hillfort dating from around 800BC, but with indications of earlier Bronze Age farming. Recent geophysical survey suggests that the hillfort contains a well-preserved settlement including several round houses.

In addition, within the hillfort is the former site of a late 18 Century Poor House which served some of the villages in the wider community. Andy’s research on the hillfort has also led to the discovery of a potentially important oval banked enclosure of unknown date within fields to the east. The enclosure is located within fields named ‘Nimblett’ on early maps. This name is very unusual and may derive from the celtic term Nemeton or sacred enclosure. Andy’s research on Burledge presents an intriguing glimpse into our local prehistoric and more recent past, which it’s hoped will lead to further Come and learn more from Andy, in the beautiful environment of this historic church.
