Dear Friends,

We are feeling the effects of the extraordinary heatwave which is sweeping across Europe. In such conditions, something as simple as a cool drink of water becomes precious. Perhaps we have been reminded this week how life-giving and precious water truly is and how fortunate we are to have access to a fresh supply.

In this week’s Gospel (links below), Jesus tells his disciples that ‘whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones’ because they belong to him will not lose their reward. It is a beautiful reminder that God’s kingdom is often revealed through these simple, generous acts of care. Hospitality, compassion and welcome are never insignificant in God’s eyes.

Our other readings echo that call to faithfulness. Jeremiah speaks of the courage to proclaim God’s truth with integrity, even when easier voices promise what people want to hear. In his letter to the Romans, Paul reminds us that we are no longer to be ruled by the habits of our old lives, but to offer ourselves wholeheartedly to God, whose gift is life in all its fullness.

As we gather on Sunday, may we come ready to receive God’s living water and to become springs of that grace for others.

Yours in Christ,

Ian

Readings & Collect

Jeremiah 28:5-9

Romans 6:12-end

Matthew 10: 40-end

O God, the protector of all who trust in you,

without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:

increase and multiply upon us your mercy;

that with you as our ruler and guide

we may so pass through things temporal

that we lose not our hold on things eternal;

grant this, heavenly Father,

for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

BCP Collect:

O God, the protector of all that trust in thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us thy mercy; that, thou being our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we finally lose not the things eternal: Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake our Lord. Amen.

For your prayers

Please pray for…

… love and fellowship within God’s Holy Church throughout the world … that our faith may be deepened, we may be united in peace and strengthened to witness to Christ with joy and courage;

…  our world … where there is conflict and division, bring healing and understanding …  that the leaders of nations will be guided in the ways of justice, wisdom and peace;

…  all who are in need … those who are ill or anxious, grieving or lonely, those weighed down by hardship, and all who long for comfort and hope;

… those who have died and rest in the peace of Christ, especially David Churchill (Felton), Alan Sutton (Felton) and those whose anniversary falls at this time … rest them in your eternal love, and bring comfort and strength to all who mourn.
