Dear Friends,

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple, also known as Candlemas, is a moment in the Church Year when we hold both the manger and the cross in view. It is a mid-point in our journey from Christmas (40 days ago) towards Holy Week.

In our Gospel, Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in order to fulfil the law. This seemingly ordinary act of devotion becomes a moment of deep revelation at the end of Epiphany, the season of revelations! The elderly Simeon and Anna, who have waited long years in hope, recognise in this child the salvation of God: ‘a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Israel’. The candles we light on the feast of Candlemas speak to us of that same light; the true light of Christ, shining into every corner of the world and into the depths of our own lives.

In our Old Testament reading, the prophet Malachi reminds us that the coming of the Lord is not only comforting, but challenging. God comes to refine, to purify, and to call people back to justice and faithfulness. This theme is taken up in the letter to the Hebrews, where we hear that Christ fully shares our humanity, becoming like us in every way, even to the point of suffering and death. By entering our fragile, fearful condition, Christ breaks the power of death and frees those held in bondage by fear.

So, between his birth and death, Candlemas holds before us the joy and cost of our Christian discipleship. Simeon’s song of praise is also edged with prophecy of pain and hearts revealed.

May the light of Christ, presented in the Temple and shared in our humanity, be kindled afresh in us this week, and lead us onward in faith and peace.

Yours in Christ,

Ian

Readings & Collect

Malachi 3: 1-5

Hebrews 2: 14-end

Luke 2: 22-40

Collect:

Almighty and ever–living God,

clothed in majesty,

whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple,

in substance of our flesh:

grant that we may be presented to you

with pure and clean hearts,

by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

BCP Collect:

Almighty and everliving God, we humbly beseech thy Majesty, that, as thy only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in substance of our flesh, so we may be presented unto thee with pure and clean hearts, by the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Your Prayers

In your prayers this week please remember:

The Church … that, like Simeon and Anna, we may recognise Christ among us and faithfully proclaim him as the light of the world; that the Church may be purified, renewed, and strengthened for its witness in every place … pray especially this diocese and for Bishop Michael and Bishop-elect Fiona as she prepares to join this Diocese in this week… pray for Archbishop Sarah, our clergy serving in these parishes, our lay ministers and chaplains;

The nations and their leaders, that the light of Christ may guide all who hold power, exposing injustice, refining what is broken, and leading peoples into paths of peace and truth.  … for nations divided by conflict and fear, for leaders who carry the heavy burden of decision, and for all whose lives are scarred by war and injustice; pray especially for the situation in Ukraine, Iran, the wider Middle East and Sudan;

All who are burdened by anxiety, suffering, oppression, or the fear of death; that the Christ who shared our humanity may bring freedom, healing, and hope;

Those who have gone before us in faith… especially Deborah and Brenda … that they may now see the salvation they hoped for, and rest in the light of God’s eternal presence.
