Dear Friends,

Harvest Thanksgiving will be celebrated at services in three of our seven churches this Sunday, and two next Sunday. This year’s Harvest celebrations began in Regil with a Service of Thanksgiving and Supper on 19th September and will run until 26th October when we give thanks in Winford. Our Schools are also busy celebrating Harvest with acts of worship in Winford and Chew Stoke being held this week. I look forward to leading a special Harvest assembly in Bishop Sutton Primary School on 20th October. Do pray for all these services and community events which focus our attention on God the giver of all good things while allowing us to provide goods and donations to local foodbanks.

Our readings for Harvest Thanksgiving (links below) speak to us of gratitude, trust, and of Jesus as the true source of life. In Deuteronomy 26, the Israelites are instructed to bring the first fruits of the land to God, recalling their deliverance from Egypt and God’s faithfulness. This act of offering embodies thanksgiving and recognition that all blessings come from the Lord.

Likewise, in Philippians 4, Paul urges us to ‘rejoice in the Lord always’, encouraging us to live with prayerful gratitude, trust in God’s peace, and focus on what is good and praiseworthy. Thanksgiving is not only a ritual, but also a way of life that shapes thoughts and actions.

In our Harvest Gospel from John 6, Jesus teaches that he is the ‘bread of life’ offering spiritual sustenance beyond physical food. Together, these passages call us to celebrate God’s provision, respond with joyful gratitude, and seek in Christ the eternal nourishment that sustains our souls.

Yours in Christ,

Ian

Deuteronomy 26: 1-11

Philippians 4: 4-9

John 6: 25-35

Eternal God,

you crown the year with your goodness

and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season:

grant that we may use them to your glory,

for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

For your prayers

Gracious God, we thank you for the rich harvest of your Word and Sacraments. Bless our worship in our parish churches, schools and communities. May your Church here and throughout the world be a people of gratitude, proclaiming Christ as the true bread of life. Strengthen us to share generously with those in need, so that our thanksgiving may be shown in both word and deed.

Creator God, we give thanks for the earth’s bounty, for fertile soil, sunshine and rain, and for all whose labour brings food to our tables. Bless farmers, growers, and all working in food production and distribution. We pray for regions where harvests have failed, where drought, flood, or war leaves communities hungry. May your abundance be shared fairly, and may justice roll down like water.

Loving Father, we thank you for the variety and richness of life around us—for families, schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods. Teach us to rejoice in simple blessings and to care for our local environment. Give us eyes to see where loneliness or need exists, and hearts willing to respond with compassion.

Bread of Life, we remember those who hunger in body or spirit—the homeless, the unemployed, and those burdened by anxiety. Bring healing, comfort, and hope. May your peace guard hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Faithful God, as we bring the first fruits of our lives in thanksgiving, make us a people who live with joy, prayer, and trust. May we daily seek Christ, who alone satisfies.
