Dear Friends,

Our readings for this Sunday (links below) speak to us on the need for intercession, God’s mercy, and the invitation into deeper relationship with God through Jesus.

In the reading from Genesis, Abraham is pleading with God on behalf of the people of Sodom—boldly interceding for the righteous within a sinful city. His conversation reveals God’s readiness to show mercy, even when justice is deserved. Abraham’s persistence and God’s patient responses underscore the idea that God listens to those who seek justice and mercy for others.

1 Peter 3 reflects on Christ’s sacrificial suffering—how he died for the unjust to bring them to God. This passage might connect with the Genesis story through its emphasis on mercy in the face of judgment. Just as Abraham intercedes for the wicked, Christ, the righteous one, intercedes through his death for all of us. The reference to Noah and the flood further echoes God’s just judgment alongside his saving grace — a few are saved through water, symbolising baptism, which now saves believers through Christ’s resurrection.

In our Gospel from Luke 11, Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray, emphasising persistence, trust, and God’s goodness. This mirrors Abraham’s bold persistence in prayer and invites believers to approach God with confidence. The assurance that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask reflects divine generosity and a deep desire for relationship with humanity.

Together, these challenging readings reveal to us a God who listens, responds, and saves — not because of human merit, but because of his mercy. They call us believers to bold, persistent prayer, and to become intercessors for others, confident that God delights in showing mercy and giving life through Christ.

Yours in Christ,

Ian

Readings & Collect

Genesis 18: 20-32

1 Peter 3: 18-22

Luke 11: 1-13

Merciful God, you have prepared for those who love you

such good things as pass our understanding:

pour into our hearts such love toward you that we,

loving you in all things and above all things,

may obtain your promises,

which exceed all that we can desire;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

BCP Collect:

O God,

who hast prepared for them that love thee

such good things as pass man’s understanding:

Pour into our hearts such love toward thee,

that we, loving thee above all things,

may obtain thy promises,

which exceed all that we can desire;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

For your prayers

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for your Church throughout the world. Strengthen all who minister in your name, that your word may be faithfully preached and your sacraments rightly administered. We pray for our bishop, clergy, and all lay leaders. We pray for those recently baptised and those preparing for Holy Baptism, among them Mila, Iris, Pippa, Margot and Jax. Renew your Church in holiness and empower it in witness.

Gracious God, we pray for the nations of the world. Guide all who hold authority and those who shape public life. Give wisdom to leaders and inspire them to seek justice, peace, and the common good. We remember all who suffer under the weight of oppression, conflict, or poverty.

Lord of compassion, look with mercy upon all who are suffering—those who are sick, lonely, or in despair. Bring comfort to the grieving and strength to the weary. Surround those known to us who are ill with your love and restore them in body, mind, and spirit.

Holy God, bless our homes, families, and communities. Teach us to love one another, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to seek reconciliation wherever there is division. May our lives reflect the grace and truth of Christ.

We remember with thanksgiving those who have died in faith. Grant us grace to follow their example, that with them we may share in the hope of your eternal kingdom.
