Dear Friends,

This week’s readings from  Acts 16 and John 17 (links below) speak to us of the transformative power of faith. Both are testament to the fact that faith can change things! Through faith, God’s presence can break physical and spiritual chains and allow us to live in unity as his witnesses to the world.

In Acts 16, Paul and Silas have been imprisoned after casting a spirit out of a slave girl. Despite being beaten and jailed, they pray and sing hymns! Miraculously, an earthquake opens the prison doors, yet they do not flee. This simple yet profound act of faith leads to the jailer’s conversion—he and his household are baptised that same night. So, God’s power can work through suffering and, furthermore, our Christian witness—through faith, patience, and love—can lead others to salvation.

In John 17, Jesus prays for all believers, asking that they may be one, just as he and the Father are one. The unity Jesus prays for is not superficial, but deeply rooted in the loving relationship shared within the Trinity. Jesus desires that his followers be united in love, so that the world may see that love in action and believe in him.

The connection between these passages lies in the witness of unity and love amid trials. Paul and Silas’s conduct in prison demonstrates the very unity and peace Jesus prayed for. Their faith and unity under pressure reflect Christ’s vision of a community that points to God through love.

God is often at work in unexpected ways and in unexpected circumstances. Whether Christians are in chains or in prayer, our witness to his transformative power matters —and through it, others may come to believe.

Yours in Christ,

Ian

Readings & Collect

Acts 16: 16-34

John 17: 20-end

O God the King of glory,

you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ

with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:

we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,

but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us

and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

BCP Collect:

O God the King of glory,

who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ

with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven:

We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless;

but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us,

and exalt us unto the same place

whither our Saviour Christ is gone before,

who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost,

one God, world without end.

For your prayers

Father we give you thanks that your Son was raised from the humiliation of the cross to the glory of heaven. We offer our prayers through him who, as our great High Priest, ever intercedes for us:

We pray for all who serve the church as bishops, priests, deacons and lay ministers … we pray especially for Bishop Michael and all who minister in this diocese and in these parishes … give them grace to nourish your people through their teaching and care;

We pray for our Christian brothers and sisters throughout the world who worship in fear of persecution, hatred or deprivation … sustain their faith and strengthen our fellowship with them through prayer and practical support;

We pray for each other as we seek to be witnesses of Christ in our everyday lives and work … lead us by the Holy Spirit in the ways of Christ, that we may learn to speak as he would;

We pray for our King and his government, and for the leaders of the nations as they try to resolve the difficult issues confronting them … we pray for peace in our world … for an end to to suffering and starvation in the Middle East … for Ukraine … bless all peacemakers, peace-keepers, and all who work to promote justice, reconciliation and opportunity for all;

We pray for those who face distressing illness, increased frailty or painful treatment … bring healing through the care they receive from doctors and nurses, relatives and friends;

Eternal God, we remember before you those who have died in the faith, especially Sonia, Marjory, Marjory, Anthony, Liz and George … grant them rest and light perpetual … comfort those who grieve, and give us hope in the resurrection of your Son, our Saviour.
